I have a problem and need to vent...

In our local paper today (which came out yesterday BTW) I was reading an article on the public school cafeteria's and how they have reduced the cost of food in order to keep the lunch prices in check...I just have this problem you see... it doesn't seem RIGHT! The title of the whole article bothers me. "Rising costs result in better food at all five Bison cafeterias"

I live in an area where 58% of the students are getting reduced cost lunches based on their parents income. It's a depressed and very pour area in more ways than one. ANYWAY... on to what I want to vent about.

The Food Service workers have started to make things from scratch. To cut cost... And this is one of the quotes that bothers me "Anything homemade tastes better and is more nutritious than something out of a can." also this one "We want to take care of our children, they are our top priority." NOW I'm all for the making things from scratch/homemade... we all know it tastes better and is more nutritious. What bothers me is they could have cared less about the children before the money crunch... it was what was easiest for the workers. If the children are indeed their top priority why what until the economy has gone sour to make changes?! If there are 58% of kids in the school system that can get reduced cost breakfasts and lunches you know that they probably aren't getting very nutritious food at home or very much food in their meal, if they get meals. Shouldn't the breakfasts and lunches they get in school be nutrition packed?
Am I wrong?

Thanks for letting me vent...

You vent, I rant, both necessary activities in today's US of A. Our frustration comes in when we expect the government to do the right thing.

I'm calmer these days about the public schools, because I've realized that the problem is not what they teach or don't teach. It's not even what they cook or don't cook. No, the problem with public schools is that ... they're public! If you take the government out of the education business, all those other problems disappear.

There. Thanks for letting me rant. :)

I totally agree with you. Like with everything else going on in the world, the words "our top priority" have little meaning until it cuts into one of the "Big Boys" or "Big Girls" pocket book.

It would all be so disheartening if we didn't have God.

True enough, Sara. But I've been wondering lately if we shouldn't just be thanking God for the horrible government we have. When it gets bad enough, I suspect more people will look to God instead of the government.

Did you see that post I did about Zimbabwe?

http://akagaga.blogspot.com/2008/11/thank-god-for-robert-mugabe.html

Here these people don't have food to eat and they're thanking God for their dictator, because more people are reaching out to Jesus.

Sometimes our blessings don't look like blessings.

Yes I did read your blog post yesterday. There was such a mixture of emotions while I was reading. My thoughts then turned to our own country and what I've been hearing on the news (that I don't watch or listen to very often) The food pantry's here have an increase of 50% over last year. The main supplier for turkeys went out of business last year and to add to the mess donations are down. And the cherry on this is child abuse is up 100% and sexual abuse is up 50%.

In the part of MO I live in child abuse is the highest in the whole state. OK I took a slight detour! :)
Even in all of this we are still so very blessed as country compaired to others in the world.
