I know it's hard to believe that I do at times get on my Dairy "soapbox" spout off my big mouth. I've not been going to the Hoard's Dairyman blog for some time now. It just tick's my corset strings with the stuff they come up with. Their latest being being this. So I made a quick comment this morning. Of course it's moderated so as of yet my comment hasn't shown up. And I highly doubt it will. All I said was this:
"I think we all know what we should not do during these horrible times we have been put in. It's a good reminder though and thank you for it. But what about the things we can do to prevent this from happening again? Why can't for just once dairy farmers all come together and fight for what is right? The processors are making money hand over foot even in the worst of times. How many dairy farmers can retire with $1 million dollars or more in benefits at the end of 30 years for working a 40 hour week? I'm sorry but it's not happening, not with the farmers I know anyway. We work 7 days a week, sometimes 20 hour days. NO time off, no vacations, and definitely no paid over time.Consumers are thinking we (the farmers) are making all the money because of the still high prices of dairy in the stores. No one wants to give them a true statement of what goes on out here. Instead they see the cute California cow commercials and they see high prices in the store. When are we going to stand up for our rights? My great grandfather made more money off of his butterfat in the 1940's than we are now. How much longer are we really going to take this? When is someone ever going to stand up and say no more? When will the rest of us stand behind this person when they finally have the courage to demand better for the rights of dairy farmers and NOT the rights of the processors?"
Plus I added a little more here and there. I wonder if someone will get around to letting my voice be heard or not. Time will tell.
On the bright side :) the sun is shining and is warming things up into the 40's. No wind or even any breeze just a nice some what warm day on the farm. And with 2 new additions! Velma one of our goats kidded today! 3 days early with 2 little girls! No pictures yet but some to come. It's been a busy day around here. And all I wanted was a day of rest. No rest for the wicked right? :) Or maybe it's No rest for the big mouthed dairy farmer who just wants justice. In more ways than in just farming.
OK I'm off to get a cuppie cake that I made yesterday and watch a movie (Amazing Grace... If you've never read the book you should!) and try to knit a few row's on my dish cloth maybe.
