Plans, summer, and a catch up ... long

Does anyone else have days that NEVER and I do mean NEVER go as planned? I had my Saturday all planned out I was even going to enjoy two hours just for myself in the afternoon. So this was the "plan"

8:00 - 8:15 am Fix fence so Sparky will stay with the milk herd.
8:15 - 8:30 am pick up new baby who was 2 days old. I could find the little darling.
8:30 - 10:30 am Feed babies.
10:30 - 11:30 am eat breakfast and gear up for the next phase of the day.
11:30 - 1:00 pm Help mom finish mowing the yard.
1:-00 - 3:00 pm ENJOY MYSELF!!!!
3:00 - ???? Evening chores.

Sounds good right???? OK so this is how it really went.

8:00 - 8: 45 Fixing the fence did NOT go as planned since the new fence stretching tool has been painted over all the moving parts and the aren't moving. After 45 minutes I give up to go and get the calf.
8:45 - 9:15 The little darling is not so little... at 80 pounds and having eaten his breakfast he was a bit of a hand full to get in the truck.

Now this is where the day goes to perdition.
9:15 - 11:00 I decide since the day isn't going as planned I would check the dry cows while I was out and about. So back in the back of the field they are in is an over grown thicket of sorts. While peering into the darkness I see a large brown form. A cow had calved and was down. (this is when my mind is saying don't be dead oh dear lord PLEASE don't let her be gone, to this is just great JUST GREAT there goes my day!) Just being honest here. OK so she's still alive, there is HOPE, I get out of the mess ASAP and race to get my grandmother who can give an IV to her since she's in milk fever. I can't I KNOW I KNOW... I should be able to but it just gives me the willies. Anyway we work with her for a while and get her sitting up right. After a while mom and I go back down to check on her and she's flat out again so we pull her up. AGAIN!

11:00 - 1:10 Feed the babies. They were very hungry I must say.

1:10 - 2:00 Have breakfast... OK lunch whatever you want to call it.
2:00 - 3:15 Work with the cow to get her up and drinking water.
3:15 -4:00 rest
4:00- 4:30 have a light supper
4:30 - 9:45 Work with the cow and do chores.

I was in tears by the end of the day. It had just been one of THOSE days and I couldn't take it anymore. I had hopes that by the next day she would be up (the cow that is) It wasn't to be. She had crossed the bar by the next morning. Something just wasn't right with her... It was more than milk fever. And come to find out she had had twins. Joy... Anyway I think she tore while calving and had a pinched nerve. As her back end never really moved right. We tried and did the best we could. A vet couldn't have done any better. It's always hard though when you lose one.

It seems as though my summer will be summed up as the summer of sucky babies. Right now we have 39 on the bottle. It takes a little over 2 hours to pour up milk and feed babies. I keep wanting to make a cake and ice cream and I just never get there, have the time, or if I do have the time there is no energy. I did make cookies the other day. That should do me for the year. :)

Canning for the summer has started. Today we will be doing corn. What's left after the raccoons have been getting into it. Danged varmints. They are also eating my raspberries!!! ARGH

I hope everyone is having a safe and good summer!!!

Blessings for the day:

We are one day closer to the weekend and extra rest.
With every calf that's born I am one day closer to weaning the ones that were born before them!
Being loved by my family and God.
