The Good,The Bad, and The Ugly....

Yesterday was one of those days. We'll start with the Good... even though that would be the backwards way of saying things.

The GOOD: "Stacy" got up and is doing very well " knock on wood ". I was worried she would have trouble or be paralyzed after the bad morning she had. I am so thankful the Lord answered our prayers.

The BAD: Stacy had a hard, horrible, down right painful time calving yesterday morning. The calf was partly out and already gone. After trying for quite some time in trying to pull it, I told my grandmother to call a vet. I just could NOT get it to come out. We finally got a vet to come out ( a miracle in it's own right ) He got the calf pulled with what seemed no problem. I wasn't there but it seemed to got rather quick...making me feel kinda bad that I couldn't get it done. ANY WAY! I was feeding Mikey when my grandmother came and told me the ugly truth.

The UGLY: The truth of the matter was the calf was deformed and would have never lived long had he been born alive. And I never could have gotten him out. The vet in 20 years of practice had NEVER seen a calf like this. It was as if he had no pelvis. Where it should have been it isn't, and his back legs look like a butterfly. And I did take a picture of him... I know... It's just a farmer thing I suppose. I won't post it... So don't worry. :)
Anyway he was perfect other than that. And since this was only our second calf in 30 plus years of dairying that had been deformed. So I think the odds of this happening again is slight. Still it's sad and Stacy is mourning the lose. Yes cows do have their own way of grieving.

On another good note. We had a heifer calf on Monday afternoon. Daisy Mae had Delightful... The both have minds of their own, are willful, snotty... and most importantly alive and doing well!
